Service Mission

A few months before Nick was released as bishop President Rockwell asked him if we would consider serving an Inner City Mission. This is where couples serve in wards that need extra support. The bishop might assign them to work with certain individuals on their self reliance, welfare, education, getting medical help and so forth. To tell you the truth I was a little scared. Deep down inside I always wanted to serve a mission with Nick, but on the surface, I had doubts about myself. Until one day when I was reading/listening in 1 Nephi. I have always been amazed at how dedicated Nephi was. No matter what was asked of him, he did it. At this time I was listening in Chapter 17 where Nephi is told to build a boat. "Thou shalt construct a ship after the manner which I shall show thee....And I said, Lord, whither shall I go that I may find ore to molten, that I may make tools to construct the ship after the manner which thou hast shown unto me?" I noticed that Nephi didn't say, "I'm not sure if I can do that", or "why do you ask me?" He asked where do I find the ore to make tools. He didn't have any doubts that he could build a ship, even though he probably had never built a ship before. I then knew that I wanted to be like Nephi and put my trust in the Lord to the point that I would do anything that was asked of me.

And so Nick and I are serving together in the Parkside Ward in Magna. We love the bishop and the ward. There is no doubt in my mind that the Lord wanted us here at this time. I have to tell you about our first visit. The bishop asked us to visit a nonmember elderly couple where the husband just had heart surgery. I had baked a loaf of bread and as we drove up to their house Nick said, "Honey, why don't you do the door approach." I said, "Door approach, what door approach, we were suppose to learn a door approach?" He laughed, got out and opened my door smiling (he thought he was so funny!). Well, we knocked on the door and the husband answered and away I went. I didn't even give Nick much of a chance to talk! How about that!! It was a nice little visit and they seemed happy to have someone look in on them. The wife even gave me a hug when we left. I was amazed that I was able to look past myself and my doubts. I am sure we won't be accepted everywhere like that, but it was nice for a first visit. Anyway, I am thankful for the Lord's blessings and for this opportunity to serve with Nick. After years of raising children and meeting somewhere in the middle once in a while, it is nice to know that we actually really like each other!!! :)

As I was leaving the ward today I thought how I missed seeing you guys and wondered how life was going. I'm so glad we have blogs to stay in touch. It is really great to find out that we still like and can even work with our other half. ;-) Have fun and be sure to show up the Bish.
